WILL: Don, thanks for reply, my comments are also embedded:

WILL: we try to stick to row four (4) of the "Cisco Valid
Configuration Table", which is GOOD, according to cisco--
normally. In our wierd case (linux+3com 3c905c NIC), we can
use row three (3), and all are happy, speed is fast, no
duplex mismatch. I understand cisco warning however, as we
have been bitten by this in the past, but in this case, it
works. I don't like this config becasue its subject to reboot
re-autoneg failures per cisco warning. But I don't like
setting server switches to manual either. So my whole dilemma
invloves trying to get 3com NIC to behave per row four (4) of
this table.

Cisco saying "Uhmmm, yeah, that thing we told you to do,
uhmm, ignore that."

WILL: I scanned link and couldn't figure out what part about
cisco's suggestion was retracted: flow control, or
hardsetting? Hardset to autonegotiate change is not an option
as many things fail when both ends are set to auto-neg. Flow
control can be turned on, but I normally leave off.

>> We configured the network card settings using. MII. What
exactly did you configure?

WILL: either set card to auto-neg, or set it to 100 FD. It
seems like switch for flow control setting is not available.
It almost seems like we set to 100, but really get 10, even
though ifconfig shows card set to 100 FD.
